Blackpool: New Horizons
17-06-2003
Plans to regenerate the resort of Blackpool began two years ago when the Borough Council acknowledged that the resort had gone into decline. It was recognised that the regeneration of the town would have to build on the tourism potential of the resort, as well as diversifying the local economy and developing the retail and administrative role of the town centre.

The Council successfully developed and secured Economic Development Zone funding from the Government before bringing in Jerde and EDAW masterplanners in September 2002 to take forward the regeneration of the resort.

The masterplan focuses on development in four districts within the Economic Development Zone, covering an area of 200 hectares. The four districts are titled:
o Pleasure Beach – entertainment area
o The Village – enhancing existing Victorian architecture and setting
o Central Beach – entertainment area
o Town Centre – commercial and retail centre

Proposed developments within these areas include a re-designed North Station, new office buildings, conference centre and entertainment complex, leisure complex, casino resort hotels, glass aquarium, open-air event park and landscape improvements.
