In September 2000, the European Commission published
two significant policy documents:
- Communication from the Commission to the Council
and the European Parliament on Integrated Coastal Zone Management: a
Strategy for Europe, adopted 27 September 2000
- Commission proposal for a European Parliament and
Council Recommendation concerning the implementation of Integrated Coastal
Zone Management in Europe, adopted 8 September 2000

In its plenary session of 5 July 2001, the European
Parliament adopted the amended Recommendation on ICZM in Europe that was
submitted to the Council and the Parliament in 2000.
