General Coastal NewsShoreline Management Plan Consultation Events26-11-2009 North West England and North Wales Coastal Group is holding a series of workshops on the current Shoreline Management Plan consultation and all are invited to attend. Invitation Our coastline is changing. It always has and it always will. Waves, tides, wind and storms move sand and sediment around the coast and in and out of estuaries, changing the way that the shoreline looks, works and protects our homes and towns. Climate change and increased use of the coast for homes, recreation and industry will speed up these changes and it is important that we take action now to prepare for the future. To help us to deal with our changing coast and the effects of climate change we need a long term plan to set out how our shoreline is looked after. Shoreline Management Plans (SMP) identify the best way to manage our coast over a long period of time, taking into consideration the social, environmental and economic effects of different ways of protecting communities and land against coastal flooding and erosion. SMPs provide evidence and guidance for Local Authorities, the Environment Agency and other organisations to help them plan the best way to look after their coast and consider risks from the coast whilst planning development. We are currently in the process of creating a new SMP for North West England and North Wales and we need your help to make sure that the information we've used and the suggestions we've made are correct and appropriate. You can find the draft SMP2 at www.mycoastline.org or in your local town hall. We will be holding a series of short, informal workshops to give you the opportunity to find out more about shoreline management planning in your area and have your say.
