The Forum was formally launched at the first North West Coastal Conference held in Blackpool in May 2000. The Forum is the first of its kind to be launched in the country and has been promoted as a model of good practice in the Local Government Associations National Coastal Strategy and the Wildlife Trusts and WWF report 'Just Coasting - An assessment of the commitment of the devolved administrations and the English regions to integrated coastal management'. Originally supported by Government Office for the North West the Secretariat function was transferred to the North West Regional Assembly in September 2002. This move coincided with the election of the first independent chair for the Forum and subsequently the merger of the Coastal Forum with the North West Bathing Water Forum to further integrate work on coastal issues. The North West Bathing Water Forum was established in September 1999 and brought together a strong partnership of organisations dedicated to ensuring that North West bathing waters met the EC Bathing Water Directive. The Bathing Water Forum has the expertise to collate information on water quality and identify actions and studies that can help contribute to solving the problem. Jointly the skills and expertise of the two Fora
will create a significant resource for delivering a fully integrated approach
to the management and development of the North West coast. |
